Sometimes
the models themselves are the subjects on camera, as
in the
topographical landscapes or the scale models; the model
itself being the substitute for the normal sized set.

The art department
also builds scale working models of large sets and tank
sets so that the camera shots can be planned. This helps
to show the practicalities of getting the many vehicles
and equipment into the set, and to show where any services
that are needed can be run. This type of model generally
has removable parts to make the planning easier and should
mean that there are no surprises when we get to set. |

Level Biology . BBC Schools TV. Giant model of a single
cell. All the components were modelled in clay and cast in
resin/fibreglass, and come apart so that the camera can see ‘inside’.
The surface has a high finish as the macro-glide camera lense
travelled through and close to all the surfaces.
Blake’s 7. BBC TV. Model of alien
landscape 12ft square. Here seen ready to shoot.

Newsnight.
BBC TV. During the Gulf War, this model was used for the
news items. Carved in Styrofoam using
large scale topographical maps for reference.
Arena. BBC TV Documentary. Tower of Pisa
model made in thin plaster about 85cms. high. The tower
had to be
imploded and so small detonators were attached to the inside
and the shot filmed at high speed.

Rebecca.
BBC TV Drama. Model of Manderly Castle. The castle was
actually two dimensional wood, and painted to
look three dimensional. Pyrotechnic flares and gas fishtails
were used for the burning and was filmed at high speed.
Chronicles of Narnia. BBC TV. This topographical
model (taken from descriptions) of the Narnia landscape
was used for the opening credits.
